MAP testing, explained for parents

MAP testing (NWEA MAP Growth) is an adaptive test many U.S. schools give in fall, winter, and spring to measure your child's level in math, reading, and language usage. Here's everything in one place.

MAP test basics

  • Adaptive: each answer changes the difficulty of the next question.
  • Scored on the RIT scale: one scale from kindergarten to 12th grade, so growth is easy to track.
  • Untimed: most students take about 45–60 minutes per subject.
  • Three times a year: fall, winter, and spring testing windows.
